The future of WinMo 6.5/7

It seems a nasty rumor going around is that Windows Mobile 6.5 will be replacing the early 2010 release of WinMo 7 and the release of WinMo 7 will be pushed back to Q42009. The 6.5 will be "revamped" to become even more finger-friendly to satisfy the users that push for a better finger experience.
To add to it...after 7 is released, it is rumored that 6.5 will stick around to be a "budget" platform to compete with Android (which I find to be hard to swallow seeing as Android covers low and high end); with 7 being the "premium" platform to fight against iPhone OS.

I'm taking this rumor with a grain of salt seeing as the mobile OS war is heating up pretty quickly. Microsoft can not risk waiting yet ANOTHER year to release the ground-up revamped mobile OS they have been promising for awhile now.
As far as the two seperate platforms, that too seems unlikely. As I stated above, Android is growing in demand...and with high-end devices (the rumored Rachel, the Hero, Galaxy) I dont think 6.5 is going to be able to just compete with the "lowest common denominator" of platforms.

All we can do is wait and see. For Microsoft's sake, I hope they come swinging with WinMo 7 at the Q12009...if not, it's going to be a long road for them. Especially with Android directly targeting the Windows Mobile crowd, both manufacturer and consumer wise.
